Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have embraced “new dynamic roles” since leaving the Royal Family, in a similar move to what the Duke’s ancestor, Prince Edward, attempted to do after he abdicated the throne in 1936. The Sussexes are often compared to the former King Edward VIII, who left the Royal Family and then wrote a series of news articles and an autobiography about his experiences as a senior royal.
Royal historian Ed Owens claimed: “Originially, Edward had wanted to have a more dynamic role as a representative of the Royal Family abroad living in the USA or living in Europe, but his brother George VI, the new king, and the courtiers denied him that more dynamic role.
“Occasionally, he’d pop back up and write a series of newspaper articles, talking about his earlier life, talking about the abdication crisis.
“That made him a bit of money and then he sort of disappeared again.
“In the case of Harry and Meghan, they now exist on the periphery of the wider royal family, and yet they’ve embarced new dynamic roles.
“They want to do things for themselves, they want to make their own money, they want to embrace new philanthropic opportuntities and promote new causes.”
Prince Edward, the eldest son of George V and Queen Mary of Teck, succeeded the throne on January 20, 1936 and became King Edward VIII.
His reign however, was shortlived as it became apparent that he could not marry his lover Wallis Simpson, an American two-time divorcee.
As Head of the Church of England, the monarch was expected to uphold the teachings of the Church and was unable to divorce.
The British Government, Palace courtiers and the general public were also strongly opposed to the idea.
This eventually caused the abdication crisis of 1936, where King Edward VIII decided to abdicate the throne in favour of his younger brother, King George V.
He became the Duke of Windsor and was exiled to France, where he married Wallis Simpson and remained in relative obscurity.
In 1951, he released his memoirs and also conducted a number of televised interviews, where he discussed his life as a Royal Family member.
Prince Harry, his great-great nephew, has recently announced that he will be releasing his memoirs in late 2022.

Since departing the Royal Family in January 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had led a strained relationship with their royal relatives.
The Duke of Sussex has promised to revealed an “accurate and wholly truthful” account of his life, and stated he would write it “not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become”.
His memoir is expected to cover his childhood, his army career and time as working royal, as well as his role as a father and husband.
Ghost-written by Pulitzer prize-winner J. R . Moehringer, it will hit bookshelves next autumn, with proceeds from the book sale to be donated to charity.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle currently reside in Montecito, California, with their two young children.
