King should strip Harry and Meghan of royal titles says Whittle

Prince Harry had a rather blunt response when asked why he and Meghan Markle continue to use their royal titles, despite quitting the Firm to start a new life in California.

The titles were granted to them by the late Queen Elizabeth after their wedding in May 2018, however the royals are said to have discussed stripping them of their status as Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Since leaving royal life behind, the Sussexes have made a series of explosive claims about their time in the Firm, firstly with an interview with Oprah Winfrey, then in their Netflix docuseries and Harry’s memoir Spare.

Due to these attacks people have questioned why the royals have not stripped them of their titles “at the highest level”, with Harrty asked outright about the title dilemma in an interview with Anderson Cooper.

While on the promotion trail for Spare in January this year, the Duke was asked why he and Meghan had chosen not to give up their titles, to which he replied: “And what difference would that make?”

Mr Cooper added: “One of the criticisms that you’ve received is that okay, fine, you want to move to California, you want to step back from the institutional role. Why be so public?

“Why reveal conversations you’ve had with your father or with your brother? You say you tried to do this privately.”

Harry then responded firmly: “And every single time I’ve tried to do it privately there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife.

“You know, the family motto is ‘never complain, never explain’. But it’s just a motto. And it doesn’t really hold.”

Following a “warm” phone call between Harry and King Charles for the latter’s 75th birthday earlier this month, there has been speculation that the warring families soon could make amends.

Sources have claimed that Harry and Meghan would not refuse an invite to spend Christmas with the royals at Sandringham this year, but Prince William may be less than keen.

William and Harry’s relationship is now virtually non-existent, with William and Princess Kate allegedly likely to spend Christmas with the Middletons if the Sussexes are invited.

Former royal butler Paul Burrell believes an invite to Sandringham is still quite far off, as he said on behalf of Slingo: “I think there is a very bad feeling in the Royal Family about Harry and Meghan that if they let them back into the royal fold they will be betrayed again.

“They see it as airing dirty laundry in public and telling tales in public when they know all too well that they shouldn’t do that.”

He added: “They see it as Harry now making money off the back of being royal which is wrong in their books.

“They have thrown other members of the family under the bus which is well documented now and you can’t go back: once you have done it you’re out and I think Harry has to understand that.”
