Prince Harry warning: Duke told ‘bargaining’ for military roles impossible in royal review

Meghan Markle and Harry have ‘emerged winners’ says expert

Buckingham Palace’s spring review of Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex’s deal with the Queen is “not a situation where bargaining can really happen”, a royal commentator has warned. The royal couple were subjected to a number of conditions for their stepping down, including the Duke being “stripped” of some of his military roles. HeirPod host Omid Scobie and ABC News foreign correspondent Maggie Rulli explained what was likely to happen with the review.

Mr Scobie told listeners: “We have to remember there were some issues of contention when they stepped away.

“Of course, Harry was very publicly stripped of some of his military honours.

“There has been talk that he may want to come back in this review period and discuss taking those on again.

“But I think, as we’ve seen, this is not a situation where bargaining can really happen.”

He continued: “In the conversations that I’ve had with people close to the Sussexes, I think they have really made peace with the way everything is at the moment.

“It seems to me that there is a narrative that people are keen to keep going.

“They claim the couple somehow may want to get something from their old roles back, or that the Royal Family may punish them further.

“There’s a lot of talk about titles being taken away.”

The commentator added: “But from what I understand none of this is actually the case.

“This is a couple that really did exactly what they said they’d do.

“They had less than 12 months to achieve so much.”

Mr Scobie said: “We’re now at the point where I think if anything during these talks, it will simply be a chance to reflect on the past year.

“As we know, that move didn’t leave things particularly great with certain family relations.”

Harry lost three appointments: Captain General Royal Marines, Honorary Air Force Commandant of the Royal Air Force Base Honington and Honorary Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Naval Commands’ Small Ships and Diving.

The Captain General Royal Marines role was one he succeeded from Prince Philip in 2017.

Currently no one has filled the place in his absence, which is why there are suggestions that his suspended duties could be resumed again.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expected to have their position reviewed in March when the one-year trial period agreed with the Queen in 2020 comes to an end.
