The Daily Mail’s Andrew Pierce appeared on the Jeremy Vine show on Monday to challenge comparisons between the press scrutiny faced by Princess Diana and by Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle. The row comes after Prince Harry appeared to suggest the Sussexes and his late mother have endured similar pressure and experiences in an interview with US chat show host Oprah Winfrey, according to a 30-second teaser released by US broadcaster CBS.

Mr Pierce told Jeremy Vine: “Comparison with Princess Diana, look it was terrible what happened to Princess Diana,

“But it is the old myth that the press killed her.

“She was in a car being driven by a drunk, the car was a wreck, the car was being driven a high speed.

“There have been exhaustive tests done, the driver of the car was drunk that is why princess Diana died.

“She was stalked by the press, I’m not saying she wasn’t, and many lessons have been learnt.

“But Princess Diana also talked to the press a lot, she manipulated the press too, it wasn’t a one-way street with Princess Diana.”

Claims about Diana’s driver being under the influence at the time of the accident have been disputed by his family, who have long maintained he took his responsibilities very seriously.

An inquiry into Princess Diana’s death in 2008 found the crash that killed the royal was the result of “grossly negligent driving” of both cars following Diana’s and of the princess’s Mercedes driver.

Meghan Markle and Harry: Piers Morgan criticises Oprah interview

“We mustn’t rewrite history and I was one of those who cried at her funeral,” he added

“Devasted when she died.

“But it is not as simplistic as saying the press destroyed Princess Diana.”

Last month it was revealed Meghan and Harry were taking part in their first sit-down interview since Megxit.

This already recorded chat with Oprah will be broadcasted in the US on March 7 at 8pm ET (March 8 at 1am GMT).

According to CBS, the interview is touching upon a wide range of topics – including motherhood, Meghan’s arrival in the US, her life under the public eye and the Sussexes’ hopes for the future.

While the Primetime Special was first said to be approximately 90 minutes long, it has now been reported to last for two hours.

During this rare interview, Meghan first chatted alone with Oprah to later be joined by her husband.
