Prince Harry has become notable over the years for his charitable work, following in the footsteps of his mother Princess Diana. He is perhaps best known for his charity Sentebale, which supports the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people affected by HIV and AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana.

The Prince, who was only 12-years-old when his mother died, has since paid a twofold tribute to his mother with his charity work.

Sentebale means ‘forget me not’ in Lesotho and the name was chosen “as a memorial to the charity work of our own mothers, as well as a reminder to us all not to forget Lesotho or its children,” the Prince said when the charity was established.

What’s more, Prince Harry named the charity after his mother’s favourite flowers, forget-me-nots.

Forget-me-nots tend to grow tall and the petals can be found in blue and pink.

The flower reportedly became her favourite after receiving them from a close family member.

Sean Harkin, head gardener at Kensington Palace, told Vogue magazine: “Earl Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, gave some forget-me-nots to her when they were younger.

“They stayed with her as one of her favourite flowers, so it was important to include them.”

The memorial to Diana at Kensington Palace is also filled with forget-me-nots in her memory.

Diana’s work with people with HIV and AIDS was groundbreaking and a crucial development in stopping the stigma surrounded by the disease.

She was pictured holding hands and embracing people who were infected by the disease at a time where people were apprehensive about how the disease could be spread.

Her sons have taken on her charitable streak, having worked for years on their own projects and being patrons and ambassadors for a variety of different causes.

Prince William has frequently and openly spoken about his struggles with mental health, especially in the wake of his mother’s untimely death, and runs his own mental health charity called Heads Up.

He began to struggle after the death of his mother, Princess Diana, describing his loss in a recent documentary as a “pain like no other”.

He also revealed that becoming a father reawakened feelings and traumas he experienced when he suddenly lost his mother.

He said: “Having children is the biggest life-changing moment, it really is.”

Prince Harry has previously said the death of his mother has been “a wound that festers,” and how his life in the media spotlight reminds him “of the bad stuff.”

Speaking ahead of the bombshell ITV documentary of his and his wife Meghan Markle’s South Africa trip in 2019, he said: “I think probably a wound that festers.

“I think being part of this family, in this role, in this job, every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash, it takes me straight back, so in that respect it’s the worst reminder of her life, as opposed to the best.”

During the documentary he traced his mother’s footsteps, walking through a minefield and replicating the famous picture taken of his mother some 20 years earlier.

“Being here now, 22 years later, trying to finish what she started, will be incredibly emotional, but everything that I do reminds me of her,” the duke said in the documentary.

“But as I said, with the role, with the job, and the sort of pressures that come with that, I get reminded of the bad stuff, unfortunately.”

The pair recently separated their charity projects in accordance with the fact that Harry and his wife Meghan decided to step back from Royal life and pursue independent careers in the USA.
