The Duke of Sussex has announced plans to release his memoir next year and Buckingham Palace is braced for further damning revelations. Harry, 36, is not the first royal member to go down this avenue, with Sarah Ferguson and King Edward VIII among those who decided to tell their respective tales.

Royal author Anna Pasternak has said Harry should “take note” of King Edward, the Duke of Windsor, who waited 15 years to share his own story of triggering a royal crisis.

Edward threw the constitution into disarray after abdicating from the throne in 1936.

He sensationally stepped down as head of state in order to marry American socialite Wallis Simpson, as she was a divorcée he was not allowed to marry her otherwise.

The Queen’s uncle, who remains the only monarch to abdicate, published his book, A King’s Story, The Memoirs of The Duke of Windsor, in 1951.

Ms Pasternak, wrote in the Telegraph: “The Duke of Windsor and Harry also share, along with their love and loyalty to their dominant American wives, an ambivalence about their heritage.”

She added: “However, unlike Harry, who self-exiled from the Royal family 15 months ago, choosing love and family over monarchical duty, the Duke of Windsor waited 15 years before publishing his account of abdicating to marry Wallis Simpson.”

In his memoir, Edward said the intervening years had allowed things to cool down.

He wrote: “The rule of reticence that binds kings and princes in a constitutional society is not lightly put aside.

“It was therefore with some hesitation that I approached the task of writing this book.

“However, after the passage of a decade and a half the political passions aroused by the most historically controversial aspect of my career, the Abdication, have long since cooled, and a just perspective of my life and reign should now be possible.”

Ms Pasternak expects the tone of Prince Harry’s book to be very different as she said Edward “did not detail his bitterness over his life in exile, nor his pain towards his unyielding family”.

Harry has said his memoir will be an “accurate and wholly truthful” account of his life experiences.

His highly-anticipated tell-all book will be released in late 2022 and the Duke said it will be narrated “not as the prince” but as the man he has “become”.

The year of publication also coincides with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The Queen, 95, will officially celebrate 70 years on the throne in June.

“I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story – the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned – I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think.

“I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a first-hand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful.”
