Meghan Markle, 39, and Prince Harry, 36, shared their baby news with the world on Sunday and are said to be “overjoyed to be expecting their second child.” The couple are already parents to one-year-old Archie Harrison and focussed their pregnancy announcement around him becoming a big brother.
A Sussex spokesperson confirmed the happy news in a statement which read: “Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.”
The announcement was accompanied by a striking black and white photo of the couple taken by longterm friend of the Sussexes and professional photographer, Misan Harriman.
The picture shows them under a tree with Meghan lying back in Harry’s lap as she cradles her baby bump.
While Meghan and Harry have not confirmed how many weeks pregnant they are, it is thought that the Duchess is around the five-month mark.
Their baby is expected to arrive in mid-2021 which could see the birth coincide with several important royal milestones.
Prince Harry was due back in the UK to mark his grandfather Prince Philip’s birthday on June 10 and the Queen’s Trooping the Colour parade which is due to go ahead on June 12.
However, if the dates coincide with the birth of his second child it seems likely Harry could push back his UK return until July when he and Prince William are due to unveil a new statue of their late mother Princess Diana at Kensington Palace.
Speculating on the potential clash, royal editor and expert Camilla Tominey told Today Extra: “Normally you would expect news to come along when she is three months, but we think she is about five months.”
Ms Tominey added: “In June… it’s the Duke [of Edinburgh]’s 100th birthday, it’s Trooping the Colour, which the royals will go ahead despite the coronavirus pandemic.
“Whether he can do any of that remains to be seen, because obviously, the timing does clash.
“But I think we can safely assume we will not be seeing Meghan in the UK any time soon.”

While Harry was always expected back in the UK this spring, royal insiders had previously claimed Meghan and Archie were unlikely to make the journey with him.
Now Meghan’s pregnancy has been made public it seems highly unlikely she will come back to Britain any time soon.
Meghan and Harry’s baby news comes days after Harry’s younger cousin Princess Eugenie, 30, gave birth to a baby boy on January 9.
Eugenie’s son is the Queen and Prince Philip’s ninth great-grandchild and now they have two more on the way.
The Queen’s eldest granddaughter Zara Tindall is currently expecting her third child with husband Mike and their baby is also expected to arrive in spring.
Depending on whether Zara or Meghan’s baby arrives first they will be the Queen’s 10th and 11th great-grandchildren.
Meghan and Harry’s second child will be 8th in line to the throne after their brother Archie.
Meghan and Harry have been based in the USA since their royal stepdown last March and are expected to remain there for the foreseeable future.
