Prince Harry appeared in short video in conversation with boxing duo Anthony Joshua OBE and Nicola Adams, alongside community coach, Tanayah Sam, and two young people, Reahana Gordon and Dantaye Weir Williams, for Made By Sport, a new charitable campaign aimed at promoting how sport can positively impact mental fitness. The four-year campaign set a £40million target to be raised to fund community sports across the UK. 

In the video, boxing champion Anthony Joshua explains how vital it is to “change the narrative” of what being part of a “gang” means and how the term can also have many positive connotations.

He said: “A gang is not just a negative thing. With boxing, that was where I found my gang.

“I feel like my success is attached to the discipline, regiment, lifestyle and education I’ve got through the sport.

“The gang of people I met through boxing had the same mindset as me – that’s what I love to do.”

He added: “Sport to me is more than competing. It is about the discipline and regiment it teaches you.

“The lifestyle of an athlete can be taken into any walk of life.

“It’s about how you can improve yourself as an individual through the power of sport.”

Echoing the sportsman’s comments, the Duke of Sussex responded: “I’ve seen lives not just changed but saved through sport.

“This whole campaign is about trying to explain the benefits that this has on every single person, no matter who you are. In so many communities now, sport is being used as a hook.

“You get them in and before you know it, after a week or maybe a month, their whole character is changed for the better, and I don’t think you can put a price to that.

“This is about creating a different community, having a purpose and that human connection which too many people nowadays are lacking.”

The 34-year-old, who became a dad just a little over two months ago when Meghan Markle gave birth to Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor, has in the years repeatedly proven his passionate desire to follow his mother Princess Diana’s footsteps in helping young people pursue better lives.

With young people from poorer backgrounds, approximately 50 percent are less likely to play regular sport. Made By Sport will create a four-year campaign that will champion the power of sport to change lives and sets out to raise £40m in funds to use sport to support young people from disadvantaged communities across the UK.

It will be the largest fundraising campaign ever undertaken for grassroots sport in the UK.

Justin King CBE, Chair of Made By Sport, said: “Sport has the power to change lives. It can teach us skills that last a lifetime and – in a world where local sports is under increasing pressure, where it’s easier to play on your phone than in a park and where joining gangs can be more glamorous than joining teams – we believe it can play a pivotal role in how young people develop.”

“Today marks the start of a crucial four-year journey for Made By Sport that will see the campaign champion community sports and raise much-needed funds to support it across the UK.”
