The Duke of Sussex was thought to be staying at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor with wife Meghan.

It was not known whether their children, Archie and Lilibet, were due to travel from the USA to join them.

Windsor’s streets were decked with union flags and preparations were underway for Monday, when the Queen will be brought to her final resting place in the town.

Two postboxes had been decorated with knitted tributes depicting the Queen and one of her black handbags, made by the Ickenham Postbox Toppers.

And floral tributes and trinkets continued to pile up outside Windsor Castle’s Cambridge Gate as a steady stream of well-wishers arrived to pay their respects.

Each night the flowers are moved inside the grounds and a colourful carpet of bouquets now stretches the entire length from the gate up Cambridge Drive.

One of the heartfelt messages left described the Queen as “the strongest guiding light and a beacon of selflessness and commitment”.

It went on: “In this time of mourning your passing there is comfort that you are reunited with your beloved Philip. Rest well.”

Another message simply read: “Even in death you continue to unite people. Thank you.”

Following the funeral on Monday, the Queen’s coffin will be transported to St George’s Chapel in Windsor via the Long Walk.

A large security operation is taking place and police officers have been seen searching drains and phone boxes for suspicious items.
