Royal Family members have started to reemerge from lockdown to complete public duties, reasserting their place in British society amid the pandemic. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have followed suit, and despite their departure from the senior royal ranks, have made appearances with organisations via video calls. But the couple is not doing so on the Windsor payroll, as their separation from the British royals means they can no longer do so.

Is Prince Harry still in the line of succession?

When the Duke and Duchess split from the Royal Family, they laid their intentions bare to the other royals.

Prince Harry was allegedly hoping for a clean break and initially declined a year-long probationary period.

However, the Prince hasn’t given away his place in the family – he and his wife passed on work and business privileges under the Firm.

They also agreed to stop using the HRH attached to their titles, which means an aspect of their status has dissipated.

Royal commentator Victoria Arbiter told TODAY: “They remain HRH, they simply won’t be using their HRH status.

“And the reason for that is because the monarchy has to be very careful that there’s no indication of people cashing in or monetising the monarchy or their association to the monarchy. They remain HRH, they just simply can’t use it.”

Their family ties remain, as does Prince Harry’s place within the line of succession.

Could Prince Harry become king?

Royal rules have kept Prince Harry in the line of succession, and the Duchess of Sussex alongside him.

But the chances of him eventually claiming the throne are considerably slim.

He is currently sixth in line for the throne, behind his father, brother, and nieces and nephews.

Prince Harry would likely have to step into the role under the Regency Acts of 1937 and 1953.

They stipulate if the reigning king dies and leaves an heir under the age of 18, they can ascend to the throne, but with an overseeing regent, which if Prince William died would be Prince Harry.

Otherwise, it is unlikely he will take the role, and even if he did, he would likely do so reluctantly.

Speaking to Newsweek Magazine in 2017, he said “no one” in the family truly wants the position.

He said: “We are involved in modernising the British monarchy.

“We are not doing this for ourselves but for the greater good of the people.

“Is there anyone of the royal family who wants to be king or queen?

“I don’t think so, but we will carry out our duties at the right time.”
