Prince Harry shock: The REAL reason Prince Harry put US citizenship on hold
According to a royal source reported in the Times, Prince Harry will not apply for a green card or for US citizenship like his wife Meghan Markle for the time being. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from life as senior royals on March 31, after completing their final engagements earlier in the month.
Despite his marriage to Meghan and status as a Prince, the Duke of Sussex cannot automatically get citizenship and will have to follow the same process as ordinary people.
Whether the royal couple is completely giving up their plans to live in Canada or whether they will divide their time between Canada, the UK and the USA is also not clear.
Harry’s status as the husband of a US citizen would certainly smooth his path to permanent residency, but it would not afford him any privileges.
The royal source told the Times: “The Duke has not made an application for dual citizenship and I don’t think he will apply for a green card at any point.”

Royal expert Angela Mollard has added to the speculation the move may not be permanent.
Speaking on New Idea’s ROYALS podcast, she said: “I think what’s really interesting is that we don’t know about Harry’s eligibility for staying in the US.
“He hasn’t applied for citizenship obviously if he did, if he became a US citizen, that would have implications for paying tax in that country.
“There’s a lot of that still needs to be discussed and unravelled.”
An application for US citizenship would require the Prince to renounce his titles and would also expose him to US taxation on his earnings not only in America but internationally, including those made in the UK.
It is unclear whether he entered America under the 90-day tourist visa waiver programme available to most Britons, or has a diplomatic or another special visa.
Like most people’s plans, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan to launch themselves in America is currently shelved because of the coronavirus pandemic, however, the royal couple did announce the name of their new charity initiative.
Archewell will replace their Sussex Royal moniker, which the Queen banned them from using in light of their decision to step down from royal duties earlier this month.

The couple has left their home in Canada for the California Sun despite the troubles COVID-19 is bringing to the area.
Meghan and Harry moved there primarily to be closer to Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland.
The couple is thought to be renting a house in California while hunting for a more permanent family home to share with their 11-month-old son, Archie Harrison.
Despite the move, the couple has shown their unwavering support for the UK.
The couple announced today they have donated £90,000 to a UK hunger charity to help with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Feeding Britain will receive the funding from profits made on their 2018 wedding broadcast.
The charity helps provide food and other essential survival means to those who struggle the most in the UK.
The organisation’s national director, Andrew Forsey, told Fox News: “The generous support we have received from Prince Harry and Meghan will, thank God, sustain our emergency response to coronavirus, which is extending a layer of protection to tens of thousands of families.
“That response has as its main aim the regular provision of nutritious meals – breakfast, lunch, and dinner – to families, so that no child goes to bed hungry.”
