Prince Harry says his life is 'like The Truman Show' in new podcast

Prince Harry has compared his life to the movie The Truman Show in a new podcast with actor Dax Shepard.

The Duke of Sussex appeared on the Armchair Expert to discuss topics of mental health, growing up with privilege, unconscious bias and his time in the military service.

Asked if he was nervous about the interview, Harry said: ‘Unfortunately in today’s world, [mental health] is quite a sensitive subject. Not just for the people who are sharing, but ultimately the subject matter itself has to be handled with care.

‘There can be humour, there can be everything else, but when it ends up getting weaponized by certain people, you can never predict it. Although I now probably can.

‘That doesn’t’ worry me anymore. I used to be fearful of it, but now the same groups of people who come at it so negatively, or try and turn it against you or weaponize it, and so affect so many millions of people from doing so, it actually encourages me to speak out more.’

Opening up about online trolling, Harry said he tries to approach them with compassion and by thinking ‘how’s your day going’.

He went on: ‘It is really hard when you’re on the receiving end of this vile, toxic abuse, but the reality is flip it, and say “what happened to you? What made you want to come at me like that when clearly we’ve never met, you don’t know me – like, what’s your goal? What are you actually doing? I know it might make you feel better in the moment, but long term it’s not gonna help”.’

Harry also faced teasing about naked photos of him, which emerged from Las Vegas in 2012. He joked the images were ‘relatable’ and said it was a few weeks before he went to Afghanistan.

He explained that living in the US had made him feel freer than in the UK. He continued: ‘Living here now I can actually lift my head and actually I feel different, my shoulders have dropped, so has hers, you can walk around feeling a little bit more free.

‘I can take Archie on the back of my bicycle. I never had the chance to do that.’

The Truman Show was released in 1998 and stars Jim Carrey as the titular character, who is born on a TV programme and lives out his life unaware he is being watched by millions of people.

Harry stepped back from the Royal Family in 2020, along with his wife Meghan Markle and their son Archie, who was born in 2019.

The family now live in Santa Barbara, California, and no longer carry out official royal duties.
