Fans reacted with disappointment after England lost to Italy on penalties in the Euro 2020 final on July 11. Around 60,000 fans at Wembley witnessed the Three Lions’ defeat, while millions watched in pubs, fan zones and homes. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – who were at Wembley with Prince George – congratulated the Italian side.
They wrote on Twitter: “Heartbreaking.
“Congratulations Azzurri on a great victory.
“England, you’ve all come so far, but sadly this time it wasn’t our day. You can all hold your heads high, and be so proud of yourselves – I know there’s more to come.”
Prince William’s love for football is well known.
He is the president of England’s Football Association and has attended the Euros and the World Cup in the past.
While he often used the phrase “Football’s Coming Home”, his brother, Prince Harry, appears to be a bit more cautious with his words.
Ahead of the World Cup semi-final in 2018, while on his royal tour in Dublin, the Duke of Sussex was asked whether football was coming home.
He chose not to answer out of fear of jinxing the result.
Former Irish rugby star Brian O’Driscoll said: “I asked him ‘so is football coming home?’
“But he refused to say.
“I think he just said he isn’t as confident as everyone else about England winning tomorrow.

“He said he won’t say it because he doesn’t want to jinx it.”
Harry’s wife, Meghan, also seems to be a football supporter.
In 2018, it was disclosed the soon-to-be-Duchess was a big fan of Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane and then-Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
The former Suits actress reportedly followed England captain Kane on Twitter, despite Prince Harry’s love for Arsenal – Tottenham’s bitter rivals.
Belgian stopper Courtois was another player who had caught the eye of Meghan.

SunSport contacted Kensington Palace to find out why she had decided to keep tabs on Kane and Courtois on social media.
However, almost immediately afterwards her social media accounts got taken down, which had remained open throughout her courtship with Prince Harry.
Kane was one of three Premier League players the former Suits star followed, The Sun reported.
Chelsea goalkeeper Courtois was also on the list, along with Stoke defender Geoff Cameron.
The majority of people Meghan followed on Twitter were reportedly friends, fellow celebrities and politicians in the States.
Neither Kane nor Courtois are big names outside of football in America, so Meghan following the pair was seen as a big clue as to where her loyalties lied on the pitch.
