Prince Harry, 36, has been showered with compliments from Sussex fans after it was revealed he sent flowers to be placed at his late mother Princess Diana’s grave at her family home Althorp on Sunday. While the Duke has been based in the USA since last March he went out of his way to mark the milestone with a touching gesture.

Royal author and journalist Omid Scobie tweeted the news that was shared by one of Harry’s spokespeople.

Mr Scobie tweet read: “A spokesperson for Prince Harry says that he arranged for flowers to be laid at the grave of Princess Diana on the Spencer family estate in Althorp, Northamptonshire for #MothersDay in the UK today.”

Princess Diana died tragically in a car crash in Paris on August 1997 when Harry was just 12.

The Duke has previously spoken about the lasting impact his mother’s death has had on his life and how it haunts him to this day.

While Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, 39, are now based in California with their son Archie Harrison, the Duke is keen to maintain his British ties.

Royal fans rushed to compliment Harry on his Mother’s Day tribute on Twitter.

One gushed: “I have so much respect for Harry and will always have respect for him and nothing will ever change that.

“He never lost his self-respect after everything that has happened to him and his wife.

“He isn’t fake like most royals and he always been true to himself and to others.”

Another wrote: “I love his love for his mama.”

A third chimed in: “This is a thoughtful and endearing gesture from Harry who is doing a great job of carrying on his mother’s philanthropic legacy.”

While a fourth said: “What a sweet gesture. I wonder what type of flowers… Happy Mother’s Day to everyone.”

One fan shared a GIF of Diana holding Prince Harry as a toddler with the message: “So sweet.”

However, some Twitter users hit out at the Duke who has faced some backlash in Britain following his and Meghan Markle’s explosive sitdown interview with Oprah Winfrey.

One critic raged: “Can he do nothing private? Why does he have to have a spokesperson declare how he celebrates his mother?

“Again another example of how they just live for the fame & not the privacy they claim.”

While another put: “Flowers laid, check. Press called, check. Not subtle, check.”

Prince Harry is due back in the UK on July 1 when he and Prince William are scheduled to unveil a new statue in Diana’s honour.

The statue will be in the sunken gardens at Kensington Palace, which was known to have been one of Diana’s favourite spots.

According to one royal commentator, the important event could be a chance for Harry and William to put their differences aside.

Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk:  “Let us hope that there will be a reconciliation as they think back to the past they shared, with a mother who was the world’s most glamorous woman and who enriched both their lives and, with her charitable work, those of countless others.”
