Prince Harry, alongside his wife Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, joined Oprah for a two-hour primetime interview special on Sunday evening, which aired on Monday evening on ITV in the UK. The tell-all interview contained revelations and allegations that have left the Royal Family undoubtedly reeling, painting a picture of racism, insensitivity and dysfunction within the family. The Palace has not yet responded to the interview, which has made headlines around the world. But one topic was largely left out of the talks, and that was Prince Harry’s relationship with his grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Do Prince Harry and Prince Philip get on?

Prince Philip and his grandson, Prince Harry, have shared a very close relationship in the past.

The Duke of Edinburgh, 99, was admitted to hospital recently after reporting feeling unwell to the Palace doctors.

And according to reports, Prince Harry was quick to jump on the phone to his grandmother, the Queen, to ask how his grandad was doing.

The Prince has also reportedly been self-isolating in his California home, in case he needs to come back to the UK last-minute at some point.

Prince Harry and Prince Philip’s bond was properly solidified following the death of Princess Diana in 1997.

While Prince Harry had always been close to his extended family, he and Prince William relied more and more on the Queen and her husband, Prince Philip, for guidance as they grow up.

Prince Philip reportedly took special care of Prince Harry following the loss of his mother and “took him under his wing”, according to a royal source.

The Duke of Edinburgh lost his own mother at a young age, which meant he could sympathise with the Princes’ struggle.

Tina Brown, author of the Diana Chronicles, detailed the Duke’s response to the tragic occurrence.

Ms Brown said Prince Philip “was brilliantly effective with his grandsons, offering them gruff tenderness and outdoor activities, like stalking and hiking, to tire them out”.

Prince Harry has always been connected to his grandfather through their shared military affiliates, too.

Remembrance Day commemorations often featured the grandson and grandfather working as a team to pay respect to the nation’s fallen heroes.

In 2013, Prince Philip even spoke with Prince Harry’s Walking With The Wounded team at Buckingham Palace.

However, it’s understood Prince Harry’s relationship with his grandfather somewhat deteriorated after he started seeing Meghan.

Prince Harry is said to have bailed on a hunting trip in which he was the guest of honour, explaining that Meghan didn’t want him involved with guns.

In Ingrid Seward’s book, ‘Prince Philip revealed’, the royal author explained his grandfather would have taken huge issue with Harry opting to skip the trip.

However, as Sunday’s interview with Oprah revealed, there are always two sides to every story.

Prince Harry has expressed sadness at his family’s actions, and undoubtedly wishes things were different for everyone.

As Prince Philip lies in hospital recovering from a hip-related procedure, the family will likely want to put everything behind them and move on with a stronger, healed relationship.

However deep-seated the issue may be, especially following the explosive tell-all, hopefully the good news of Harry and Meghan expecting a daughter will be enough to unite the grandson and grandfather.
