In 2020, Meghan and Harry abdicated from royal duties to pursue a “financially independent” life away from the Firm. The couple, along with their son Archie – now two – moved to California, where they purchased an £11m mansion in Montecito.

Harry and Meghan welcomed another edition to their family with the birth of their daughter Lilibet in June.

Halloween is a big holiday in the US and as it approaches, the Sussexes could choose to take their children trick or treating around neighbours, including their close friend Oprah Winfrey’s home.

Halloween will be one of the first milestone holidays they celebrate as a family of four.

In the past, Halloween is an occasion that Harry and Meghan have celebrated together.

In 2016, Meghan shared an image on her now-defunct Instagram with her hiding her face behind a carved pumpkin with a toothy smile.

The image, dating from autumn 2016, reportedly showed how Meghan and Harry celebrated their first Halloween together in their own special way despite not being publicly linked at the time.

In 2019, a source told The Sun: “She’d been to London several times but this was the first time he’d been to her home city.

“They haven’t been to bars or clubs because they were worried they’d be spotted.

“Instead it’s been cosy nights in with wine and good food. Harry loved every minute of it.”

Also in 2019, the couple took to their old Instagram account to mark the occasion, and they shared an image of their 2018 visit to a special effects workshop in New Zealand.

Writing when Archie was just a few months old, they captioned the picture: “Wishing you all a safe and fun Halloween from our family (and our little pumpkin) to yours!”

While the children are still quite young, Harry and Meghan may opt to stay closer to their abode for smaller-scale celebrations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Located just a stone’s throw away from the former royals is the home of chat show host Oprah Winfrey, who would no doubt offer a warm welcome to the family for the occasion.

Ms Winfrey has been described by Jonny Dymond, the BBC’s royal correspondent, as “a very close acquaintance” of Harry and Meghan.

Oprah was invited to the wedding of the couple in May 2018, when they tied the knot at Windsor Castle.

The couple’s Santa Barbara home is just a six-minute drive down the road from Oprah’s sprawling Promised Land 70-acre estate.

It comes after the couple sat down for a tell-all interview with the US host back in March, and speculation arose that the two-hour special was shot in California.

During the interview, Ms Winfrey said that their chat wasn’t filed at the Sussexes’ property in Montecito but rather at a “friend’s house.”

While the location for the interview has never been revealed, Rob Lowe – who also lives in the neighbourhood – speculated with the hosts of E! News’ talk show “Daily Pop” that it occurred at the chat show host’s house.

Back in May, he said: “It’s so funny, everybody thinks the interview was shot at my house, and then my friend Ted Sarandos, who runs Netflix, everybody thought they shot it at his house.

“Here’s my thing — and I have no idea, I have no idea — I think they just plain old shot it at Oprah’s. I swear to you. And I think they just said it was at a mystery location.”

During their tell-all interview, Harry and Meghan made controversial claims about their time as senior royals.

The couple mentioned “concerns and conversations” which had been raised by a member of the family about what colour Archie’s skin would be when he was born.

A statement was issued by Buckingham Palace in the aftermath which said the Royal Family was “saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan” and that “while some recollections may vary” the issues were “taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately”.
