The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the ceremony yesterday where Meghan gave a rousing speech to young world leaders from across the globe. The event was their first public appearance in the UK since the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June this year.

Meghan has been a counsellor for the organisation since before her duchess days, having been involved since 2014.

The pair showed their appreciation for the UK by clapping hard for the flags of Great Britain as they were waved at Bridgewater Hall.

Flags of more than 200 countries were waved during the ceremony. The Sussexes stood up during the presentation of Ukraine’s flag in a moment of solidarity.

Meghan wore a flattering wide-legged red jumpsuit, whereas Prince Harry donned a classic navy blue suit and tie.

During her speech, Meghan said she was pleased to be back in the UK and reflected on her journey with the One Young World organisation.

The duchess has been a counsellor for the movement since 2014, before she met her husband.

In her speech, Meghan said: “It was several years ago in 2014 that I was first invited to be a counsellor at One Young World and, in many ways at the time, I was probably a lot like each of you: young, ambitious, advocating for the things I deeply and profoundly believed in.

“And also looking around and wondering, ‘How on earth did I get here?’ Have any of you today so far had that feeling, that ‘Pinch me’ moment, where you’re just so, ‘How am I here?’

“And at that dinner there were 28 to 30 of us, the counsellors, and there I was this girl from Suits and I was surrounded by world leaders, humanitarians, prime ministers and activists that I had such a deep and longstanding respect and admiration for. And I was invited to pull up a seat at the table.

“I was so overwhelmed by this experience, I think I even saved my little paper place card that said my name on it – just proof, proof that I was there. And proof that I belonged.”

Prince Harry did not deliver a speech, but he was present in supporting Meghan for her first UK outing in two years.

Their UK visit comes amid speculation they will not visit other members of the family.

The couple are staying at Frogmore Cottage, in close proximity to the new home of the Duke and Duchess of Cambrige’s Adeleide Cottage on the Windsor Estate.

It is unknown if they will visit the Queen, who is currently in Scotland awaiting the arrival of Liz Truss, who was elected Prime Minister yesterday following the Tory leadership campaign result.

It also comes against the backdrop of Prince Harry’s ongoing battle over their security arrangements.

The duke has applied for a judicial review of the decision to provide police protection for his UK visits.

Later this week, the prince will appear at the WellChild Awards – a charity event to celebrate the lives of sick children.
