Prince Harry didn’t want anyone to “question” his grandparents after the Oprah Winfrey interview, royal commentators have said. The Duke of Sussex “defended their legacy” and has been open about his close bond with both the Queen and Prince Philip. Royally Obsessed podcast hosts Roberta Fiorito and Rachel Bowie discussed this relationship in the wake of the Duke of Edinburgh’s death.

Ms Fiorito told listeners: “We know from the Oprah interview and his conversations with James Corden that Harry and Meghan had been quite in touch with the Queen and Prince Philip.

“Harry’s anecdotes about Philip just shutting his laptop after a call are nice to think about right now.”

Ms Bowie added: “And the fact that Harry wanted clarification on the question of who mentioned how dark Archie’s skin colour would be.

“He said it wasn’t the Queen or Prince Philip.”

She continued: “He really wanted to defend their legacy from anyone questioning whether it was one of them.

“It’s very clear that Harry loves his grandfather.”

During the Oprah interview, Harry and Meghan had spoken about a member of the Royal Family expressing “concerns” at how dark their son’s skin would be when he was born.

The Duke of Sussex said: “That conversation, I’m never going to share. It was awkward and I was a bit shocked.”

Prince Harry and William ‘have spoken’ says Andrew Neil

After the special was broadcast, Oprah spoke to fellow CBS host Gayle King about Harry’s desire to clarify.

She said: “He wanted to make sure that I knew, and if I had an opportunity to share it, that it was not his grandmother, nor his grandfather that were part of those conversations.

“He did not tell me who were a part of those conversations, as you can see I tried to get that answer, on camera and off.”

The Duke has now returned to the UK for the first time since leaving last year to attend his grandfather’s funeral.

Meghan is unable to join him as she is heavily pregnant and her doctor advised against the international travel.

Harry is now self-isolating for five days, as per Government requirements.

A negative coronavirus test will clear him to attend the ceremony in-person.

It is likely that he will not be able to wear his military uniform as he gave up the roles when he stepped down as a working royal.
