The Duke of Sussex, 36, announced last week he would publish his memoir late next year, marking the latest potential bombshell in his relationship with the rest of the Royal Family. Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, 39, sent shockwaves through Buckingham Palace last year with their announcement that they would step down as senior royals. The couple now live in Montecito, California, with their two children Archie Harrison and Lilibet Diana.

The move followed months of reports that there was a rift between the Sussexes and Harry’s brother, Prince William and his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.

Earlier this year, Harry and Meghan opened up about their experience of royal life in their explosive sit-down conversation with American talk show host and celebrity interviewer, Oprah Winfrey.

Broadcast on CBS and ITV in March, the interview saw the couple make a number of allegations, including that there is racial prejudice within the Palace.

Meghan, who is mixed race, claimed that while she was pregnant with Archie one royal had asked “how dark” her unborn baby’s skin would be.

One of the other more shocking revelations came from Harry, who admitted that he is “disappointed” by his father Charles, and is on a “different path” to his brother, William.

According to historian Dr Edward Owens, the Duke’s comments will affect Charles, who is the first in line to the throne, more than they will William.

The former lecturer at the University of Lincoln and author of ‘The Family Firm’ told Express.co.uk: “He leaves a gaping hole at the side of Charles and it has done more to destabilise Charles’ monarchy than it has William’s.

“Harry has destabilised the monarchy already and that’s why I don’t think his memoir is going to do any more significant damage.

“The relationship isn’t a good one at the moment by the sounds of things, Charles has lost one of his trusty lieutenants in Harry.

“The whole ‘Charles project’ was built around family and two sons supporting him as king at his side and he’s now lost one of those guys.”

Harry’s “disappointment” centred on his claims that his father had stopped taking his calls when he and Meghan were planning to move to North America.

He also told Oprah that the Royal Family had “literally cut me off financially” in the first quarter of 2020 and that he had to pay for his and his family’s security.

The Duke said he would not have been able to afford to cover the costs himself without the inheritance from his late mother, Princess Diana, who was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

Harry has not set an exact release date for his memoir, which is to be published by Penguin Random House in the UK, the proceeds of which will be donated to charity.

The book will cover his life from childhood to his military service, as well as his role as a husband and father, according to Harry and Meghan’s Archwell website.

“I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become,” the Duke said in a statement.
