Prince Harry ‘laughs out loud’ at question about his and Meghan Markle’s future
Prince Harry ignored questions about how discussions on his and Meghan’s future are progressing asked by members of the press gathered at Buckingham Palace ahead of the Rugby League World Cup draw, the Daily Express royal correspondent Richard Palmer said. Mr Palmer wrote on Twitter: “Prince Harry ignored questions from the media about how discussions are progressing on his and Meghan’s future.”
The Duke of Sussex was also spotted “laughing out loud” after the first question on this topic was asked, Mr Palmer added.
He wrote: “He had his back to us by then but I am told by a colleague on the other side that Harry laughed out loud when the first question was asked.”
Prince Harry is carrying out his first engagement after announcing last week his intention to step down as senior royal alongside his wife Meghan.
As patron of the Rugby Football League, Harry is hosting the draw for 2021 – just hours after he backed the association’s new mental health initiative.
In a video shared by the League, Prince Harry praised the initiative, called Mental Fitness Charter, which will promote mental wellbeing across the community of players, coaches and families.
He said: “Rugby League isn’t just a sport, it’s a community.
“And one that takes care of its own.
“For many years, it has been at the forefront of promoting and supporting food mental fitness, working hard to build a positive mindset for everyone involved in the sport.
“So I am proud to support the Rugby League World Cup 2021 Mental Fitness Charter.
“This is the first time that a major international sporting event has a central Charter focusing on the mental fitness of players, coaches, fans and communities hosting the matches.
“This Charter will build on the brilliant work already happening in Rugby League by committing to training and educating all those involved in the tournament, and the wider Rugby League family, not only in how they can look after their own mental fitness but also support others to do the same.
“This includes delivering mental fitness workshops to eight thousand young Rugby League players and their family, and training grass roots coaches.”
During the event, Prince Harry spoke again of the importance of sports and its impact on mental wellbeing.
He said: “Not only do I continue to see sport actually changing lives, but it’s saving lives as well.”
This engagement comes a week after Meghan and Harry set out their plans for the future.
In a statement published on Wednesday on their Instagram account and new website, SussexRoyal.com, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said they want to become financially independent, no longer be full-time working royals and live between the UK and North America.
Their requests have been heard by the Queen, Prince William and Prince Charles on Monday, when the senior royals gathered at Sandringham House for crunch talks.
After the meeting, the monarch acknowledged there are still “complex matters” to discuss.
She said in a statement: “Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family.
My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.
Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.
It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK.
These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.
