Channel 5’s royal documentary, Prince Harry: The Troubled Prince, reflected on Harry and wife Meghan Markle’s decision to step down as senior royals. Royal expert Angela Levin insisted that Prince Harry will be seen as a member of the Royal Family wherever he goes. She added he will never be able to be seen as ordinary regardless of what he does outside of the Royal Family.

The narrator Glynis Barber said: “Meghan and Harry planned to split their time between Canada and the UK.

“Whether that would solve Prince Harry’s troubles remains unclear.”

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams added: “We will see whether that brings them contentment and the peace that they are seeking.”

Ms Levin reflected on a conversation she had with Prince Harry before and her thoughts on his future.

She said: “Prince Harry knows in his heart what he wants to be.

“He said he wants to be ordinary to me, he can’t be ordinary.

“He is a member of the Royal Family wherever he goes, he will be known as a member of the Royal Family.”

Ms Levin reiterated that the Queen remains open to welcoming Prince Harry back to being a senior royal at a later date.

She said: “The Queen has made it very clear that she would always welcome him back.

“The arrangements were they have to drop the titles and not receive their sovereign grant and all these restrictions are only for a year.

“After that, it is going to be looked at again, so they really are under the watchful eye of the Royal Family.”

Since Ms Levin’s comments, it has been confirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not be returning to their former roles in the Royal Family.

The Queen received confirmation last week that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would not be returning as working royals, and so are also forced to give back their remaining patronages and honours

The Buckingham Palace statement on the decision read: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of The Royal Family.

“Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.

“The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family.

“While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much-loved members of the family.”
