The royal couple named her Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor in a sweet nod to the Queen. The monarch’s affectionate childhood nickname was Lilibet which she acquired from her grandfather King George V. Prince Harry is believed to have always loved the name, or Lili, as a shortened version.

A royal expert told OK! Magazine: “Back in 2019 when the Duchess was pregnant with Archie, she and Harry took part in a walkabout in Merseyside and someone in the crowd later revealed he’d asked her how she spells her daughter’s name – Lily.

“He took great interest in it.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex publicly announced the birth of Lilibet on Sunday.

She was born on Friday morning in a hospital in Santa Barbara and weighed 7 lbs., 11 ounces.

In a statement they said: “It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world.

“Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.”

Prince Harry is set to return to the UK later this month in order to attend the unveiling of a statue to his mother, Diana.

The Duke, 36, and his brother Prince William, 38, are due to unveil their long awaited monument on July 1.

A plinth for the statue has been put in place in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace.

Princess Diana tragically died with her fiancé Dodi Al-Fayed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.

It is reported that the Queen has also invited Harry to a private dinner for two with her at Windsor Castle.

A palace source told the Daily Mail: “It’s a typically magnanimous gesture by Her Majesty.

“The lunch will be a chance for them to talk things through.”
