Prince Harry ‘has made his bed in the US’ as Sussexes’ return to UK ruled out in poll

Meghan Markle and Harry 'should drop royal titles' says expert

The Queen’s grandson has now spent more than nine months living abroad – his longest ever stint – having departed the UK for a new life across the pond in mid-March. As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced major projects this week, including Meghan’s first investment in a start-up and the couple’s multi-year deal with Spotify, royal fans have said they cannot foresee Harry returning to his country of birth.

Express.co.uk conducted an exclusive poll asking if the Duke is likely to pack up his belongings and take a flight back to the UK in the future.

The overwhelming majority (82 percent; 2,144 votes) said the father-of-one will likely stay living abroad.

Just 15 percent (402) predicted a return for the youngest son of heir to the throne Prince Charles.

Three percent of respondents (101) said they didn’t know.

In comments, many questioned whether the British public would warm to Harry upon a return as they have done so in the past.

Charles and Diana’s red-haired son was once the “Prince of Hearts” for many royal fans who saw him as the most down-to-earth member of the Firm.

One of the traits the public loved most about Harry was his laid-back nature and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

One reader said given the duke’s decision to quit the Royal Family and shun the UK for a life abroad, he should not expect a hero’s welcome if he did return.

The reader said: “The question should be, would he be welcome? Personally, I think not.

“He has burned bridges and made his bed in the USA.”

A second person who described themselves as a “staunch royalist” predicted Harry would one day arrive back in the UK and “should be welcomed home”.

They added: “But as for now, he/they should be stripped of any titles.”

And yet another pointed out that while Harry is living stateside, he does not hold permanent US residency.

This, they said, could cause problems for Meghan’s husband and he may decide it would be easier to live in the UK.

The reader wrote: “If he does not return to the UK then he will be liable to pay tax in both countries.

“And also, his income and tax affairs in the US will be a public record. I am surprised he has not returned already.”

Others said if Harry renounced his UK citizenship in exchange for US citizenship, he could use a week-long visa to cover brief trips back to Britain to see his family members.

The reader added: “A seven-day visa should suffice to cover everyone who wants to meet him including all travel time by train!”

Before moving to the US with Meghan, 39, and Archie, 19 months, Harry spent nine months travelling for his gap year.

During his overseas experience he worked on a sheep farm in Queensland, Australia, as a jackaroo.

He also used the gap year to work on charitable projects with Aids orphans in Lesotho.

A total of 2,647 readers took part in the poll which ran from 10.45am to 9.45pm on Wednesday, December 16.
