Prince Charles’ office has insisted he paid a “substantial sum” to his son Prince Harry to help him with his move to America. The Duke of Sussex had claimed that he was “literally cut off financially” by his family when the financial help stopped last summer. ITV Good Morning Britain’s Political Editor Ranvir Singh discussed the implications of the latest publication on the royal household accounts.
She told viewers: “The Clarence House spokesperson said he doesn’t think there is a vast difference in what Prince Harry was saying and what Prince Charles’ accounts show.
“What it does show is that for both Prince William and Harry, the bill for Prince Charles was £4.5 million.
“What Clarence House admit is that Harry wanted to be financially independent, and actually they’ve been very successful at it.
“Harry said he had £7 million left over from Princess Diana, his combined wealth with Meghan is something like £18 million perhaps, and actually, with Netflix and Spotify, they’re doing incredibly well for themselves.”
Ms Singh continued: “But, I suppose, the problem with this narrative today is that people have unpicked some of the criticism he’s made of the Royal Family.
“At the time it was very impactful during the Oprah Winfrey interview.
“Now that time has gone on, people are being a bit more forensic about it, and that’s the narrative these accounts are adding into.
“I suppose it’s about what Harry really meant. They have given a statement rebutting any claims that they had misled the public on that phrase – ‘literally [being] cut off financially’.”

The Political Editor added: “Now the timeline is interesting. Of course, it was January last year when they decided they wanted to step back.
“They left royal duties around the March.
“The Duke had told Oprah Winfrey that he stopped getting financial support from the family in the first quarter of the year.”

Ms Singh told GMB: “What Clarence House’s accounts are showing is that Prince Charles continued to give them money from the Duchy of Cornwall until about early summer.
“So we think perhaps between April and July.
“In the Sussexes’ statement, their spokesperson says they are conflating two different timelines and this is inaccurate to suggest there’s a contradiction.
“‘The Duke’s comments during the Oprah Winfrey interview were in reference to the first quarter of the fiscal year, which starts in April, the same date the transition of the Sandringham Agreement began’.
“That is, they say, in alignment with the Clarence House accounts.”
