Harry is to be reunited with his extended family, albeit only on video, within weeks when he appears in a BBC documentary paying tribute to the life of Philip. And one royal commentator believes the film may provide an “excuse” for the Dukes of Sussex and Cambridge to reconnect on a deeper level.
Royal author Adam Helliker told the Sun Online: “You rather hope there may be a spark.
“The longer this all goes on, the worse it is to disentangle.”
The expert went on saying he believes the late Duke of Edinburgh may have liked the idea a film focused on him could reunite his beloved grandsons.
He said: “Philip was a modest man – he probably wouldn’t like all this fuss.
“But if he thought there was one scintilla of hope in unifying them and uniting them against a very difficult international backdrop and personal history, I think he would have loved it.”
Speaking about the documentary, Mr Helliker added: “I think it could be a rallying moment, a healing moment when they all remember someone who was such a pivotal member of the Royal Family.”
The relationship between Harry and William was widely reported to be strained between 2019 and early 2021.
During his landmark interview with Oprah Winfrey, aired in March, Harry repeated what he told Tom Bradby in October 2019 when discussing his relationship with William.
The Duke of Sussex told Ms Winfrey: “You know, as I’ve said before, I love William to bits. He’s my brother.
“We’ve been through hell together. I mean, we have a shared experience. But we… you know, we’re on… we’re on different paths.”
Prompted to speak about the state of their brotherly relationship during the interview, the Duke said: “The relationship is space at the moment.
“And, you know, time heals all things, hopefully.”
Harry, 36, has not spoken about his bond with William, 39, since March.
The brothers have since come together on two occasions.
First, in April, when they attended alongside close relatives the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh.
Following the funeral service, the brothers were seen chatting to one another on their way back from St George’s Chapel to Windsor Castle.
On July 1, the brothers met again, this time to honour the legacy of their mother Princess Diana on what would have been her 60th birthday.
During the unveiling of the statue of the Princess of Wales they commissioned in 2017, Harry and William appeared relaxed in each other’s presence.
Documentary Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers will air on BBC One on September 22 .
The film, originally created to mark the Duke’s 100th birthday in June, will feature all of the Queen and the Duke’s children and adult grandchildren.
The sovereign, however, is not among the contributors listed in the corporation’s official announcement regarding the film.
But she has granted “special access” to her private cine-film collection, the BBC said, making the documentary “an unrivalled portrait of a man with a unique place in royal history”.
The hour-long documentary will include interviews carried out both before and after the Duke’s death in April.
