Prince Harry and Meghan yet to find their ‘raison d’etre’ since leaving royals

Harry and Meghan announce Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle still need to find their “raison d’etre” as they navigate life after the Royal Family, according to an expert.

Since stepping down as working royals in 2020, the Sussexes have received a mixed reception across the pond, where they have set up home in Montecito, California.

They initially signed deals with Spotify, Netflix and Penguin Random House worth millions to produce a stream of new content, however earlier this year it was announced that Spotify and Archewell would be parting ways after just one series of Meghan’s podcast Archetypes.

The Duchess has not announced any new projects since signing with her new talent agency, William Morris Endeavour, back in April.

Speaking on the Daily Mail’s Palace Confidential, Town & Country Contributing Editor Victoria Murphy explained that many are questioning if the couple had “made the right decisions”.

She explained: “What they have failed to do yet is to really kind of cultivate a really strong brand outside of the monarchy.

“Something that means that they can go out there and that they’re representing something other than just themselves in a meaningful way and that’s what they lost when they stepped back as working royals.

“They took away that substance that you get from representing this institution and representing a country. If want to be this philanthropic power couple with longevity then I think that’s what they need to find.”

Two of Harry and Meghan’s biggest financial hits, their Netflix documentary series Harry & Meghan and the Duke’s memoir Spare, focused on their experiences in the Royal Family and made some scathing attacks against senior members of the Firm.

However, they have seen less success since, with many claiming their narrative about royal life is starting to wear thin as the Sussexes consider their next steps.

Ms Murphy added that the pair are trying to be a “really visible, really game-changing couple…completely on their own terms.”

When asked what they were trying to do and how they were winning philanthropic awards Ms Murphy replied: “I think that is what they need, to either find that better or communicate that better.

“The Royal Family can go off and do all these things because they have this central focus at the core of their raison d’etre.

“They’re the monarchy, and that’s what they represent, and people get that and Harry and Meghan, I don’t think of either found that or communicated it properly.”

She added that Meghan is “doing things around female empowerment” and Harry is looking at internet safety but “there’s a lot of different things going on” and they are struggling with “connecting people into one really strong message”.

The Daily Mail’s Richard Eden added that Harry had “gone from being this great asset to actually, you know potentially a bit of a liability” for brands.
