Prince Harry and Meghan to focus on an issue close to the Duke’s heart after stepping down
The military is thought to be central to their new charitable entity, which is to be launched by the couple this year. A source told the Mirror the Duke and Duchess of Sussex wish to “collectively make a change in the armed forces arena”. The source added the couple will be addressing the issue of homelessness for those who have left the armed forces, and mental health issues, alongside medical care.
They said: “Harry has vowed he will never walk away from his military friends and comrades.
“Giving up his military roles has been the hardest thing for him.
“Meghan also wanted Harry to keep up his associations with the armed forces as he was devastated by having to step back from the one part of royal life he liked.
“A path has been set for him to return to take on those duties again if he wants it.”
Prince Harry has undertaken an extensive military career, serving in the Army for ten years.
He trained at Sandhurst, and joined the Blues and Royals in 2006, where he was later promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
The sixth in line to the throne also served with the Army in Afghanistan.
However, as part of the deal brokered at the so-called ‘Sandringham Summit’, Prince Harry will lose his honorary military appointments, and will stop wearing military uniform.
A statement from the Sussexes said: “While per the agreement, The Duke will not perform any official duties associated with these roles, given his dedication to the military community and ten years of service he will of course continue his unwavering support to the military community in a non-official capacity.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have expressed a passion for helping military veterans.
