Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix series Harry and Meghan is the UK’s most watched TV subscription service series of the year so far, according to recent figures. The first episode was seen by an average of 4.5 million people in the seven days after its release.
That is more than 1.5 million higher than the first episode of the fifth series of the Crown that was released on November 9 which pulled in 2.8 million viewers.
Harry and Meghan also beat the streaming giant’s other releases, including the highest rated episode of the most recent series of After Life (4.1 million), Stranger Things (3.9 million) and Bridgerton (3.4 million).
The figures published by audience research organsation Barb provide a snapshot as to how various subscription-only series have fared in the UK.
On Disney Plus the most watched show was episode one of Star Wars spin-off Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The show pulled in an audience of 3.1 million people in the seven days following it’s release in May.
The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power was the most popular series on Amazon Prime Video attracting 3.2 million viewers for its first episode in September.
However it was traditional market leader Netflix that dominated with seven of the top ten titles.
Despite the impressive figures, the audience for Harry and Meghan was still less than half the usual ratings for flagship non subscription entertainment programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing on the BBC and ITV’s I’m a Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here.
The figures for the Sussexes’ miniseries were also significantly below figures for recent World Cup matches.
Figures for the controversial royal series were also slightly below the episode of MasterChef: The Professionals broadcast on BBC one the week that Harry and Meghan was released.
However the Sussexes’ programmes for Netflix have not always been so popular.
Earlier this year the streaming giant cancelled Pearl an animated series about inspiring women created by the duchess after a fall in subscribers.
