Prince Harry, 36, and Meghan Markle, 39, pushed the nuclear button on the monarchy in their sitdown interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired in the UK last Monday. The Sussexes lifted the lid on their time as senior royals and made several damning allegations against the Royal Family, including one of racism.

Speaking to Oprah, Meghan claimed the skin colour of her and Harry’s future child had been raised with the Duke as a matter of concern by one Royal Family member.

Discussing her son Archie, The Duchess said: “There were also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he was born.”

The seismic interview prompted a formal response from the Palace which read: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.”

The statement continued: “Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

While the Queen was keen to emphasise that Meghan and Harry are still treasured members of the Windsor clan their next reunion with the Royal Family may prove awkward.

When will Harry and Meghan return to the UK?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have held onto their UK home Frogmore Cottage despite relocating to the USA last year.

While the couple are likely to stay in California longterm they may return to Britain for future Royal Family events.

The couple are currently expecting their second child, a daughter, who is due this summer.

While it was thought the Sussex family could return to Britain for Prince Philip’s 100th birthday on June 10 this now seems unlikely given Meghan’s due date.

Despite the fallout caused by their Oprah interview, Prince Harry is due back in the UK in July.

Harry is scheduled to join his brother Prince William at Kensington Palace on July 1 to unveil a new statue of their late mother Princess Diana.

Meghan Markle and Archie Harrison, one, are not expected to join Harry for the trip which falls close to the Duchess’s due date.

Meghan and Harry could choose to return to the UK together with their children following the birth of their daughter so that the Queen can meet her new great-grandchild.

The Queen no longer travels abroad having carried out her last overseas journey in November 2015.

The Queen and Prince Philip, 99, are both elderly and thought highly unlikely to take a trip to the States to visit the Sussexes at home in California.

The Duke of Edinburgh is spending his fourth weekend in hospital after he was first admitted for treatment of an infection in February.

Philip has since undergone heart surgery and is understood to be recuperating in hospital after the operation.

Last week the Palace confirmed he would remain in hospital for several more days but have not given an update as to when he might be discharged.
