Meghan Markle: Netflix deal ‘contention with Queen’ says expert

The Sun, citing US court documents, reported how Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, hope to celebrate “charitable service, education, science, literature, racial justice, gender equity, environmental stewardship, youth empowerment, health and mental health.” The Queen’s honours are handed out twice a year.

The newspaper states the award scheme will be run by the Sussex’s Archewell foundation.

Lawyers for the couple applied for permission to trademark the name in March.

But US government lawyers rejected the application because their papers were unclear and not signed.

A second set of forms, filed last week, and are said to be under review.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior members of the Royal Family in March and moved to California.

Experts believe their Montecito home is worth £11million and fellow homeowners in the town include Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres and Ariana Grande.

Their marital home, Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, is said to be “on loan” to Princess Eugenie and husband Jack Brooksbank.

Graham Smith is the CEO of Republic, an organisation that campaigns for the abolishment of the monarchy.

He told Express.co.uk the royal couple are “desperate to stay in the spotlight”.

Mr Smith said: “They want to do it on their own terms, in their own way.

“The problem is that their only claim to fame is having been royals.

“Because they walked away from that the interest in them is going to wane over the next few years.

“They are going to struggle to keep people interested because they really don’t have anything to offer.”

The Queen’s honours are handed out twice a year.

The honours list includes knights, dames, appointments to the Order of the British Empire and gallantry and bravery awards.

A knighthood or damehood is given to those who have made a “major contribution in any activity”, often at a national level.

Celebrities with a damehood include Emma Thompson, Judi Dench and Helen Mirren.

Among knighted celebrities are Paul McCartney, Michael Caine and Anthony Hopkins.
