The Duke and Duchess of Sussex recently announced their decision to step back as senior royals and the pair will split their time between Canada and the UK.

However, moving to a different country, even if on a part time basis, may come with a huge price tag for the couple.

Shipping company 1st Move International has calculated a quote the royal couple may have been given – and it doesn’t come cheap.

The company assessed household goods from their Frogmore Cottage and personal items would cost in the region of £279,000.

And to cover the cost of the transport luggage to move their items from Windsor to Vancouver, the Sussexes may have to pay over £35,000.

1st Move International drew up a bill for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex if they were to use the company’s services.

They stated that their belongings would sail from London Gateway, a state-of-the-art deep-sea port which serves as the UK’s largest port rail terminal.

The company estimate it would take 42 days to transport the goods via water.

Additional fees could be added if the company ran into issues with Canadian customs, and the £300,000 fee does not include import duty, tax or additional storage in Vancouver.

The company also stated that a whopping £200,000 could be spent on an insurance premium for precious effects such as furnishing, artwork and jewellery.

Whilst 1st Move International’s estimate is speculative, it is clear that moving overseas is a complicated process.

This is perhaps part of the reason why Harry and Meghan have chosen to keep Frogmore Cottage as their primary UK residence and family home, with the Queen’s permission.

The Sussexes also expressed their desire to pay back the sum of money they gained from the Sovereign Grant which financed the renovations of Frogmore.

The debacle surrounding the issue of Frogmore was said to be misleading, as the taxpayer did not directly shell out for the cost of refurbishment, and in fact paid no more or no less than usual for the renovations.

The decision of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to step back from life as senior royals came after months of private discussions held by the couple and Buckingham Palace.

The situation was ultimately revealed by the couple themselves, who announced their decision on their popular Instagram page, SussexRoyal, which quickly surged upwards in followers and has now overtaken the social media support of KensingtonRoyal.

Harry and Meghan’s choice to announce was quickly followed by a meeting dubbed the Sandringham Summit.

The Queen, Prince Charles, Prince William met with Prince Harry on the Queen’s Sandringham estate to discuss a way forward for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

As a result of the summit, the Queen released a statement.

She said: “Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family…

“It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will step back as senior royals, no longer formally representing the Queen, but maintaining their patronages and associations.

The couple will keep their HRH titles, but not use them going forward.

Instead they will be referred to as Harry, Duke of Sussex and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Prince Harry touched down in Vancouver earlier in the week to reunite with his wife and son.
