Graydon Carter, former editor of Vanity Fair, explained Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had made an error by flying stateside as the couple do not fit into the Hollywood lifestyle. Mr Carter, 71, got to know Meghan during her early days in royal life and ran the publication when she featured on the cover in 2017.

In the shoot for the monthly magazine, Meghan revealed herself and Harry were “two people who are really happy and in love”.

At the time, the editor of Vanity Fair for 25 years, admitted he did not even know who she was.

Mr Carter insisted Harry would be “crazy” not to leave the US as he does not have the credentials to make a name for himself in LA.

He said: “Los Angeles is not a place for people who don’t have a part in the professional firmament.

“Meghan was on a middling TV show that a lot of people didn’t see, and as for Harry, being a soldier and liking football are just not saleable talents out there.

“You can get it right if you stay on message in LA.”

Meghan and Harry officially left their senior royal roles at the end of March and descended upon Hollywood following a brief stay on Vancouver Island in Canada.

Mr Carter insisted the British public were upset at losing Harry rather than Meghan.

He told The Daily Telegraph: “British people are clearly just saddened that this star, in their eyes – and I mean Harry, not Meghan – has left the country and gone his own way.

“It doesn’t make sense to a lot of them.”

In LA, Meghan and Harry have taken time to pursue their own adventures including raising awareness for climate change.

Mr Carter took aim at their message and insisted it is hard for people to listen given the lifestyle they are living.

He added: “I think it’s very hard to start telling people about the fate of the planet when you’re flying in private planes, living in a 14-bedroom Beverly Hills mansion and living off the state.

“I really don’t think you can lecture people from that position.”

By comparison, Mr Carter was full of praise for Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William, and said they “do things almost to perfection”.

Meanwhile a new book on Meghan and Harry has claimed relations between the Sussexes and the Cambridges grew bitter, and by March the couples were barely speaking.

Finding Freedom, serialised by The Times and The Sunday Times, claims the couples hardly spoke at their final royal event, the Commonwealth service at Westminster Abbey, despite not having seen each other since January.

A spokesman for Meghan and Harry said the couple did not contribute to the book.
