Prince Harry and Meghan Markle absent from King’s first-ever Trooping the Colour

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not among the guests at this year’s Trooping the Colour event. This year’s event is particularly significant as it marks the first since King Charles ascended the throne last September. An expert has claimed Harry was not invited to attend the ceremony, though as he is no longer a senior working royal he would not have had a role in the parade or have a place on the Buckingham Palace balcony to watch the RAF flypast.

According to the Daily Mail’s diary editor Richard Eden, the couple were not invited to Trooping the Colour.

Though as they are no longer senior working royals, they wouldn’t have had an official role to play. They would have also had to travel over 5,000 miles to make the event as they now reside in Montecito, California.

Last year the couple attended Trooping the Colour from the sidelines. They did not form part of the official parade and instead watched the event from the Major General’s Office.

They were pictured chatting with a few of the younger royals, including Zara Tindall’s daughters Mia Tindall and Lena Tindall, and Peter Phillips’s daughters Savannah Phillips and Isla Phillips.

A month prior to the last year’s celebrations the Palace released a statement that only members that are “currently undertaking official public duties” would appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony. This meant Harry and Meghan, alongside Prince Andrew, would not be involved.

Last month, Prince Harry travelled to the UK solo to attend the King’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey.

The Palace confirmed his attendance at the historic event in April. The statement said that Meghan would not be attending the Coronation, instead she remained in the United States with the couple’s two children.

The last time that the couple were in the UK together was last September for the late Queen’s state funeral.

Harry and Meghan have only come back to the UK a handful of times, though much of it was marked by the coronavirus pandemic when travel was limited.

At the time of Harry and Meghan’s royal departure, the late Queen stated that the couple would “always be much-loved members of my family”.

Buckingham Palace officials also stressed, at the time, that the couple would continue to be included in family events.
