Prince George celebrated his 7th birthday on July 22. As usual with the family, the occasion was marked with the release of photographs personally taken by Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge. However, the Prince’s choice of camouflage shirt in one of the pictures sparked questions over his future, as ITV Royal Rota podcast hosts Chris Ship and Lizzie Robinson discussed.

Mr Ship told listeners: “One of the newspapers called him ‘the King of Camouflage’.

“Interesting choice of shirt because he is going to have an association with the military one day as the future king.

“This is assuming we still have a monarchy when George is of age.

“My other favourite headline said ‘Gappy Birthday’ because he’s got the gaps in his teeth.”

Many members of the British Royal Family served in British or other Commonwealth armed forces.

Others just hold honorary ranks or positions.

Prince William served in the Royal Navy, British Army and RAF from 2005 to 2013.

Although he didn’t serve during wartime, he did reach ranks of Lieutenant, Captain and Squadron Leader.

Ms Robinson added further insight into George’s pictures: “I thought these were lovely, and there was a real normality to him.

“He looked like he could have been any other seven-year-old enjoying his time outside.

“He was dressed in normal kids clothes and looked like he was just having a lovely time.”

Military service is typically expected of high-ranking royal men.

The Queen’s three sons — Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward — all had some association.

Both Prince William and Prince Harry have had proud links as well.

Active service is encouraged, and some royals have actually served in dangerous war zones.

Prince Andrew served during the Falklands War, and more recently, Prince Harry was secretly deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 and again in 2012.
