Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, two, are all great-grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth II, 94. The Queen and Prince Philip, 99, will welcome their 9th great-grandchild when Princess Eugenie, 30, and Jack Brooksbank’s royal baby is born in early 2021. Here’s how George, Charlotte and Louis will be related to the Royal Family’s newest member.

How will George, Charlotte and Louis be related to royal baby?

Prince William, 38 and Princess Eugenie are first cousins as they share the same grandparents – the Queen and Prince Philip.

Princess Eugenie is Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Louis’s first cousin once removed.

This means any child of Princess Eugenie’s will be George, Charlotte and Louis’s second cousin – as they will share the same great-grandparents.

Genealogy website Legacy Tree explains: “If you share the same grandparents, there is no difference in the generations, so you are first cousins.

“If you share the same great-grandparents, you are second cousins.

“If you share the same great-great-grandparents you are third cousins, and so on.”

In reference to the relationship Princess Eugenie has to William’s children, the website states: “If your first cousin has children, those children are your first cousins once removed because your grandparents are their great-grandparents (just one generation).”

The website adds: “If those children then have children, they are your first cousins twice removed, because your grandparents are their great-great-grandparents (which is two generations).

“Similarly, your mother’s cousin is your first cousin once removed, because his grandparents are your great-grandparents. There is a generational difference.

“However, your mother’s cousin’s child is your second cousin with no ‘removed’ added, because the two of you share the same great-grandparents.

“There is no generational difference between the two of you, so there is no ‘remove.'”

Where will Eugenie’s child be in the line of succession?

Princess Eugenie is 10th in line to the British throne and her baby will be 11th in line.

Their birth will cause a shift in the line of succession for those royals who currently come after Princess Eugenie.

This means the Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward and his children Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn will each move down a spot in the line of succession following the arrival of Eugenie’s baby.

Princess Anne and her children – Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips will also move down one place in the line of succession.

Prince George, Charlotte and Louis are currently third, fourth and fifth in line to the throne.

Their position will not change when Eugenie’s baby arrives as they are ahead of her in the line of succession.

Princ George is the future king of Britain and his siblings will be pushed down the line of succession by any children he might one day have.
