Prince Edward, 56, honoured his new role as London Youth charity’s patron by taking part in a video call with young Londoners. The Earl of Wessex caught up with some of the charities young ambassadors who support the organisation’s work to help youth across the UK.

The Royal Family’s official Twitter account shared a clip of the important video call.

The first tweet read: “Watch The Earl of Wessex, Patron, catch-up with the team @LondonYouth this week.

“HRH spoke to young Londoners Hannah, Jo-Ash and Zack about their involvement with @LondonYouth – a network of over 600 youth organisations that aims to improve the lives of young people.

In the clip, Edward spoke to Jo-Ash, Hannah and Zack about their experiences being part of a youth club.

And how they’ve given back by joining the charity’s Youth Advisory Board.

Responding to Jo-Ash Brown’s explanation of why he joined the board, Prince Edward said: “You’re absolutely right, it’s the same for all of us whenever we join anything it’s a question of just stopping, listening and learning.”

A second tweet from the Royal Family account mentioned how Edward had recently taken on the patronage from his father Prince Philip.

The tweet read: “The Earl heard about their role on the charity’s Youth Advisory Board, which brings together young people from different London boroughs to contribute to the direction of the charity.”

The tweet added: “HRH recently took over as Patron of @LondonYouth from his father, The Duke of Edinburgh.”

When will Prince Edward become Duke of Edinburgh?

In recent years the queen’s youngest son has taken on an increasing number of his father’s patronages.

The Duke of Edinburgh retired from public life in 2017 but still holds hundreds of charitable positions.

Prince Philip’s most notable royal project was establishing the Duke of Edinburgh Award which continues to support hundreds of young people to this day.

Prince Edward is now the administrative face of the Duke of Edinburgh award having taken on the post from his father following his retirement.

Prince Edward is expected to become the Duke of Edinburgh when Prince Philip dies.

Why is Prince Edward an Earl?

Prince Edward was reportedly offered the title of Duke of Cambridge upon his marriage to Sophie, Countess of Wessex in 1999.

However, it is understood Edward asked the Queen if he could be the Earl of Wessex instead because he admired the character in the film Shakespeare in Love.

Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex have two children – Lady Louise Windsor, 16, and James, Viscount Severn, 12.

The Wessexes live at Bagshot Park in Surrey, the royal residence was a wedding gift to Sophie and Edward from the Queen.

Sophie Wessex will be known as the Duchess of Edinburgh when Edward inherits Philip’s dukedom.
