A row over titles has erupted inside the Royal Family between Prince Charles and Prince Edward, according to reports. Earlier this week, it was reported that Charles would block his brother from taking the title of the Duke of Edinburgh. The title, previously held by their father Prince Philip, was publicly promised to Edward when he married Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

Speaking to Palace Confidential on MailPlus, Diary Editor Richard Eden said: “Personally, I think it would be very sad if Edward and Sophie didn’t have a prominent role in the future.

“It would be a great loss. But it is the brutal nature of monarchy. Charles will be king and what he wants goes.”

The Mail on Sunday’s Diary Editor Charlotte Griffiths responded: “Phillip wanted to bring down the size of the monarchy as well, so in one way you could say it is within his wishes.

“That could be how Charles is justifying it.”

She continued: “Edward must be fuming. This was his time to shine. This was his moment to become a big name with a big title within the Royal Family.

“It was tantalisingly close and now he has lost it. He would be fuming.”

Mr Eden added: “From what I’ve heard, Charles has not yet spoken to Edward directly about it.

“Even a week ago, Edward was telling the BBC ‘we will have to see what happens’. He had no idea. So it has been leaked out.”

Host Jo Elvin remarked: “That is embarrassing.”

The Daily Mail’s Editor at Large Richard Kay told the programme that the issue could be hugely damaging to the Royal Family.

He said: “You’d have thought this would be something that wouldn’t really matter, you’d have thought he’d got enough on his plate.

“But these things do matter to the royals, they take these things incredibly seriously.”

When Edward married in 1999, Buckingham Palace released a statement that read: “The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales have also agreed that Prince Edward should be given the Dukedom of Edinburgh in due course, when the present title held now by Prince Philip eventually reverts to the Crown.”

However, Charles’ decision to block the title is understood to be part of his plans to slim down the monarchy when he takes the throne.

Last month, Edward discussed the title with the BBC: “It was fine in theory, ages ago when it was sort of a pipe dream of my father’s and of course it will depend on whether or not the Prince of Wales, when he becomes king, whether he’ll do that, so we’ll wait and see.”

One source told In Touch: “Prince Edward firmly believes that Prince Charles has no right to take the title away from him.

“What’s even more upsetting for Prince Edward is that his beloved dad, Prince Philip, promised him that he’d inherit the title shortly before he passed.

“It’s what Prince Philip wanted, but now that he’s no longer around to have a say or step in, Prince Charles is taking it upon himself to potentially deny him of the privilege.”
