The CEO of anti-monarchy campaign group Republic, Graham Smith, told Express.co.uk that the Prince of Wales has made it clear that he wants to be a different type of monarch to his mother Queen Elizabeth II. Republic is an organisation that campaigns for the abolishment of the monarchy and for the Queen to be replaced by an elected, democratic head of state.
Mr Smith said: “If you ask Prince Charles’s spokespeople, they always say it will be different when he is King and he won’t be outspoken when he is King.
“But he has made it clear that he wants to be a different type of monarch, you also cannot suddenly unsay what he has said.
“We do not know when he is going to become King, he could make a controversial speech today and this evening be told your mother has died and now you are King.”
He continued: “You cannot suddenly go back to the platform where you were making your speech and say ‘sorry, I didn’t really mean it’.

“It does not work like that, his public statements have been on every area of Government, education, health, planning, environment.
“You name it he has been talking about it in one way or another over the last 40 years.
“A lot of it is eccentric, a lot of it is just plain wrong, a lot of it is controversial and certainly at odds with what governments and voters would want.”
During the same interview, Mr Smith told Prince Charles and Prince William that the British public should be allowed to vote to determine who replaces Queen Elizabeth II as the UK’s head of state.
Republic’s CEO added that the UK needs to have the option to choose who replaces the Queen instead of the Prince Charles automatically taking the throne.
Mr Smith said: “I think we need to move away from people sitting back as spectators being told who their head of state is going to be.
“We need to have a choice, it is clear people want to have a choice.

“For years there has been polling saying that there is no majority in favour of either Charles, William or other royals succeeding the Queen.
“Clearly, there is a division of opinion and if you want to have a choice of who it is going to be you cannot just pick between two royals.
“You must have a vote, that is called a republic.
“It is time to scrap the whole lot and let the British people vote for the next head of state rather than us being told we are going to be spectators that just have to like it or lump it when Charles takes the throne.”
