Prince Charles, who is next in line to the throne, founded The Prince’s Trust in 1976. Despite the charity helping the lives of over one million young people in the UK since it began, Charles has been urged to end his work with his founded charity when he ascends the throne. Speaking on the latest episode of Palace Confidential, royal experts discussed the Prince’s Trust and Charles’ future role as King.

Speaking to host Jo Elvin, the Mail on Sunday’s editor-at-large Charlotte Griffiths said: “I think he somehow needs to, somehow, streamline or consolidate his charitable efforts.

“There just needs to be so much more clarity then there is now.”

Also speaking on the episode, historian Dr Tessa Dunlop stated to “get him away from it”, deeming him as “the figurehead”.

Dr Dunlop added: “It’s like to Queen in politics, she’s not godling around in the day-to-day, she’s the symbol, get him away from the money.”

The Daily Mail’s diary editor Richard Eden also spoke on the show.

Mr Eden declared that he believes Charles should “try and separate himself from these charities”, adding “personally I’d like him to go further and close them down.”

After being asked by Ms Elvin about closing down the Prince’s Trust, Mr Eden corrected himself by stating not to close the Prince’s Trust if “it’s already operating at arm’s length”.

He added that Charles “shouldn’t have any charities when he becomes King”.

Mr Eden noted that they will need to be “completely separated” or “at arm’s length”.

Queen urged to 'loosen control' to prepare Charles for the throne

Last month, royal correspondent Richard Palmer sat down with Daily Express’ Royal Round-Up host Pandora Forsyth tp discuss Prince Charles’ role within the Prince’s Trust.

He said he believes Charles is “whittling down” time spent with charities in order to focus on preparing for his future role.

Mr Palmer told the Royal Roundup that, in 2018, Charles “rode back on quite a lot of his charity work”, adding that he “rationalised his charities.”

Mr Palmer added that the 72-year-old has “got a lot bigger fish to fry now”.

He continued: “He’s essentially standing in for the Queen on an awful lot of [her duties].

“That’s his focus.”
