Prince Charles is reportedly set on reducing the number of working Royal Family members to a team of just eight, all senior working royals. The reasons for the move are believed to be linked to a bid to save the reputation of the institution, which has taken a hit in recent years with constant negative headlines.  It could also be to save money, reducing the number of people paid by the tax-payer-funded Sovereign Grant.

Kate Thornton and Royal editor of Vanity Fair, Katie Nicholl were joined by royal expert Robert Jobson on The Royal Beat to discuss Prince Charles’ plans.

Mr Jobson said: “This is really the Royal Family of the future isn’t it, that’s what we’ve got, this is it.”

“They’re doing a lot more together now, we see that with the Queen being supported as she was in Scotland by Charles and Camilla.”

“They really are kind of reaffirming their numbers, aren’t they.”

Ms Nicholl added: “It’s a very new Fab Four, I mean this time a couple of years ago we were writing about a very different Fab Four.”

“Meghan and Harry and William and Kate, of course, that didn’t turn out to be so fabulous.”

Meghan and Harry were originally set to be in the line-up of Charles’ plans, playing an integral role and representing a more modern monarchy.

It was also reported that the original lineup included the late Prince Philip before his retirement in 2017.

The new, slimmed-down firm could include Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Queen, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, and Anne, Princess Royal.

Over the last few weeks, royal watchers have had a glimpse of what this could look like, with Edward accompanying the Queen with an engagement in Buckingham Palace, and the Cambridge’s alongside Charles and Camilla at the Bond premiere.

Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield spoke to Insider about the transition.

She said: “While these are all individuals that will be out in the future representing the crown, I think Charles will try to draw attention to himself, Camilla, and the Cambridge family as the future of the monarchy.”

Lady Louise was a “secret weapon” and an “asset” to the family during her TV debut in Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers.

The young royal could come to the forefront of royal duties after her 18th birthday next month.

Louise is the daughter of Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and Prince Edward, who have also been handed more public roles in recent months.
