Prince Charles under fire for becoming patron of 175-year-old homeopathy group

Charles has long advocated homeopathic medicine, which is seen as an alternative to regular chemical-based treatments. Homeopathy attempts to treat some conditions, including headaches and colds, so the body will get better by itself. But after Charles was accused of being an “immoral snake oil salesman” by a medical professor in 2017, it seems more are lining up to take aim at the future monarch for further endorsement of alternative medicine.

The Princes of Wales was appointed as patron of the Faculty of Homeopathy on Tuesday.

But scientists have criticised the heir apparent for associating himself with a group that is dedicated to a practice that has been banned by the NHS and dismissed as dangerous.

Professor Edzard Ernst, who made the initial criticisms of Charles last year, told the Guardian: “In view of Charles’s long love affair with homeopathy, this news is unsurprising.

“The question is whether this will change anything about the sharp decline homeopathy has taken in this and several other countries, and whether it will alter the verdicts of dozens of independent organisations which recently have certified it to be a pure placebo therapy.”

Graham Smith, of anti-monarchy lobby group Republic, slammed Charles on Twitter.

He wrote: “Whatever you think of homeopathy this is completely inappropriate given the widespread medical opinion that it’s quackery.”

The group, which is 175-years-old, said it was “honoured” to have Charles as its patron.

Faculty of Homeopathy president Gary Smyth said: “As the faculty celebrates its 175th anniversary this year, it is an enormous honour for us to receive the patronage of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and I am delighted to announce this news today.

“This news is also a fitting memorial to our late friend, colleague and former faculty president, Dr Peter Fisher, who was a global champion of homeopathy.

“I look forward to working with members, friends and supporters of the faculty, continuing our important work, promoting Homeopathy within both public and professional circles and maintaining awareness of this system of medicine”.

A spokesman for Clarence House told Express.co.uk: “The Prince believes that safe and effective, complementary medicine can play an important role in healthcare systems, as long as approaches are integrated with conventional treatments, a position he has reached after years of talking to experts in many different areas of medicine.”
