During the course of the 90-minute interview, Meghan and Harry levelled numerous charges against the Royal Family. This included allegations of racism within the family – and the claim Palace officials did not provide help to the Duchess of Sussex during her pregnancy when she felt like she “didn’t want to be alive anymore”. The allegations have plunged the Royal Family into crisis, regarded by some as the most serious since Edward VIII’s abdication in 1936.

It took the Palace 56 hours to issue a short statement, in which they said the Royal Family took the allegations “very seriously” and would address them “privately”.

Although the message is said to have been issued by the Queen, a Royal expert believes Prince Charles played a major role in drafting the response.

Writing in Hello! Magazine, Robert Johnson said: “I think the Prince of Wales has also taken the lead on how the Palace has responded.

“The Queen is 94 and the Duke of Edinburgh is incapacitated, so he will be trying to placate and learn lessons from this so something can be worked out to everyone’s satisfaction.”

He added: “The Royal Family like to do things as a team, and if the team is being trashed they like to react as a unit and a family.”

Prince Harry told Ms Winfrey that he had felt “let down” by his father, whom he said refused to take his calls for a short time.

The Duke of Sussex also claimed his father had cut him off financially in the wake of Megxit.

A friend close to the Prince of Wales told the Daily Mail that Charles is “deeply hurt” by his youngest son’s remarks and determined to mend their relationship.

“You are looking at a father who is deeply hurt by where he finds his relationship with his son,” the friend said.

“But, after much reflection, he also realises that nothing good will come of prolonging the fight.

“He feels it is time to heal. Now is the time to mend a broken relationship.”

They added: “The Prince has a real desire to get back to the close relationship that he enjoyed with Harry for the longest time.”

The Palace statement read: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.

“Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
