Last night the Prince of Wales attended a reception at the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery in Lostwithiel, alongside his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. The couple were at the event when news broke of Prince Harry’s memoir on his life as a royal, taking the pair completely by surprise. One Palace aide was so startled by the move, they simply responded: “Oh gosh.”

Another Palace insider refused to be drawn into details about the book until its contents are known.

They said: “We are more likely to answer questions next year when this memoir is due to be published.”

Sources closed to Charles said he was “surprised” by the news.

A senior Clarence House aide told the Mirror: “The Prince of Wales loves his children very much and remains focused on his work to ensure we have a sustainable future for the next generation including his own children, and grandchildren.”

The Duke is understood to have spoken privately with his family about writing the book, the BBC reports.

A spokesperson for Harry added that he would not be expected to obtain permission for the project from Buckingham Palace.

Last night publishers Penguin Random House revealed they had secured a global deal to publish Prince Harry’s memoirs.

The Duke said the book will share his “mistakes and lessons learned”, charting the events that have shaped him over the years.

Harry said he would reflect “the highs and lows” and be “accurate and wholly truthful”.

Penguin Random House did not say when the book will be published, but it is expected to be released in late 2022.

Harry said: “I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become.

“I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story – the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned – I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think.

“I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a first-hand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful.”

The publishers described the book as “intimate and heartfelt” and said the memoir will cover his time in the Royal Family, army and time as a husband and father.

All proceeds of the book will be donated to charity.
