Prince Charles showed a new corner of his lavish garden at his Highgrove home in Gloucestershire as he posed for a new photo released on the eve of his birthday. The Prince of Wales looks serene and dapper in a blue pinstripe suit, accessorised with a light blue tie, dotted pocket square, and a purple flower on his lapel.

The picture, shared by Clarence House, was taken during the summer, as the sunny backdrop suggests.

Many Twitter users shared a thought for the future King on his birthday, with one, @JoeMHistory, writing: “A very happy birthday to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles.”

Another, @bearz1066, tweeted: “Wishing His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales a happy 73rd birthday @ClarenceHouse #GodSaveTheQueen”.

And a third, WordsByFrank, wrote: “Happy birthday to His Royal Highness Prince Charles (@ClarenceHouse)!!!”

While royals normally spend their birthday privately with their close family, this year Prince Charles will spend his taking part in the National Service of Remembrance.

For the fifth year in a row, Prince Charles will step in for the Queen and lead the UK in remembering the fallen.

Donning his medal, he will join the rest of the country in a poignant two-minute silence.

He will then lay a first wreath of red poppies on behalf of Her Majesty, who will look on from one of the nearby balconies of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office building.

Prince Charles will then step close to the Cenotaph once again to lay his own tribute as Prince of Wales.

The Queen’s attendance at this year’s event has been in doubt until last week given health concerns.

On October 20 Buckingham Palace revealed the Queen agreed on cancelling a planned two-day visit to Northern Ireland following her doctors’ advice to rest for a few days.

She has since cancelled all her in-person official engagements outside of her palace’s walls.

But today she is putting the country and her duty first as she interrupts her period of rest to commemorate those who have died in the line of duty over the decades.

Today marks the Queen’s only in-person engagement in her diary for weeks to come.

She was meant to attend the General Synod Service on November 16 alongside her younger son Prince Edward.

However, upon announcing her attendance at today’s service, Buckingham Palace said last week: “The Queen will attend the annual Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph on Sunday 14th November.

“Mindful of her doctors’ recent advice, The Queen has decided not to attend the General Synod Service and Opening Session on Tuesday 16th November.”

Since her coronation in 1953, the monarch has skipped only six National Service of Remembrance ceremonies.

Two were due to pregnancies, first in 1959 when she was expecting Prince Andrew and later in 1963, ahead of Prince Edward’s birth.

The other four ceremonies were missed by the Queen as she was undertaking visits abroad.

On Saturday, the Queen also missed the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall.

This year’s festival was particularly important as it commemorated the 100th year of the Royal British Legion.

It was attended by all the Firm’s full-time working royals – including Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Also in attendance were Princess Anne, Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward.
