Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview levelled unprecedented accusations, not only against the Royal Family itself, but at the wider institution involved with the running of the Firm. Prince Harry sadly revealed the extent of his estranged relationship with his father Prince Charles in the interview, but maintained that he hopes “time heals all things”.

The wide ranging interview included accusations of racism by other Royal Family members, and that the wider institution failed to protect the Sussexes, resulting in Meghan becoming suicidal while she was pregnant with their son, Archie.

Buckingham Palace has not yet commented on the interview, which was one of the most remarkable interventions in the Royal Family to date. It is due to air on ITV tonight.

Similar to his wife, Harry left few stones unturned as he detailed the tarnished relationship he now has with his family, saying he felt “let down” by his father, Prince Charles.

“I feel really let down because he’s been through something similar,” he continued, likely referencing the death of his mother Princess Diana, Prince Charles’s first wife.

“He knows what pain feels like. And Archie’s his grandson.

“But at the same time, I will always love him.

“But there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened. And I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship.

“But they only know what they know.”

The Duchess interjected: “Or what they’re told.”

How did the fall out happen?

Both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke about the warm welcome Meghan received when she was introduced to the family back in 2016, with Prince Charles and Meghan reportedly having a warm relationship.

Prince Harry revealed that the cracks between him and his father began prior to the announcement he and the Duchess of Sussex would be stepping back from their senior royal roles, all the way back in January 2020.

Prince Harry insisted he did not blindside the Queen and make the announcement without consultation from Her Majesty and the wider family – Prince Charles included.

His father asked him to put it in writing, which Harry did – including specifics, like the date they planned to make the announcement.

The Duke of Sussex said he had several conversations with his father before until Charles stopped picking up.

“You just said your dad stopped taking your calls,” Oprah said. “Why?”

Harry responded: “Because I took matters into my own hands.

“It was like I need to do this for my family.

“This is not a surprise to anybody; it’s really sad that it’s got to this point, but I’ve got to do something for my own mental health, for my wife’s, because I could see where this is headed.”

The Prince was clearly saddened to reveal the information in the interview, but stopped short of saying much more about his ongoing relationship with his father.

Oprah With Meghan and Harry is on ITV at 9pm on Monday March 8. You can watch the full interview afterwards on the ITV hub
