The Prince of Wales has reportedly faced a tumultuous year. His father the Duke of Edinburgh died in April and tensions with the Royal Family have been running high since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to step down last year. However, an unearthed clip has shown the prince to have a wicked sense of humour.

In 2014 Charles poked fun at Mr Meldrum, who conducted a disastrous 1977 interview of the prince on Australian music show Countdown.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the first broadcast of the show Prince Charles recalled his interview with Mr Meldrum, who stumbled and swore his way through the whole saga.

Prince Charles joked: “There is an old show business saying that warns never to work with animals or children, but nobody prepared me for Molly Meldrum.

“Is it really 40 years ago?

“It feels like yesterday, I wish it were tomorrow, I’d cancel it.”

Countdown had become one of the most successful and popular TV programmes ever made in Australia, yet Mr Meldrum was clearly not accustomed to speaking with royalty.

The show, which ran from November 1974 to July 1987, featured live shows and music videos from world-famous Australian acts including Kylie Minogue, INXS and AC/DC.

Yet, while interviewing the heir to the throne, Mr Meldrum swore profusely and complained at one point that he was “sweating like a pig.”

Prince Charles added: “I certainly learned some interesting new Australian words from Mr Meldrum, and if he could’ve read my mind he would’ve learned some interesting new English words from me.”

Charles went on to mimic the tortuous interview.

He is shown being slapped on the arm by someone off-camera, who insists that he “get a grip”.

The Prince then asked for a glass of water, as Mr Meldrum had done in 1977.

Charles did later say: “Congratulations to Countdown, it was an evening I will never forget, and a special thank you to Molly Meldrum.”

Mr Meldrum claimed in the same retrospective forty-year anniversary episode, that he did not regret the interview, but admitted: “I definitely stuffed it up.”

He added in an interview with the Herald Sun that a day before his interview with Charles he had been in a “bust-up” with the Sex Pistols.

Mr Meldrum said: “I learned the script on the plane on the way home from London.

“The other passengers must have thought I’d lost my mind – over and over, I’d say ‘and now I’d like to introduce His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles.”
