To the nation, Prince Charles is the Prince of Wales and heir to the throne. But to several members of the Royal Family, Charles is simply a grandfather. Read on to find out some of the adorable nicknames Charles has earned from his grandchildren.
Who are Prince Charles’ grandchildren?
Prince Charles has become a grandfather on several occasions over the last few years.
Charles’ son William and daughter-in-law Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, have three children.
Prince George was born in 2013, Princess Charlotte was born in 2015 and Prince Louis was born in 2018.
Through his son, Prince Harry, and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Charles is also grandfather to Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
Meghan and Harry are expecting their second child this year, so Charles will also have a new granddaughter very soon.
Prince Charles is also a step-grandfather to five of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall’s grandchildren.
Charles’ step-grandchildren are Lola and Freddie Parker Bowles (children of Tom Parker Bowles) and Eliza Lopes, and twins Gus and Louis Lopes (children of Laura Lopes).
Charles has previously discussed how important he sees his role as a grandfather.
He has also spoken about his late grandmother, the Queen Mother, and the significant role she played in his life.
He said: “It’s a different part of your life. The great thing is to encourage them.
“Show them things to take their interest. My grandmother did that, she was wonderful.”

Members of the Royal Family have also spoken about Charles’ familial role in the past, and Charles certainly seems to be a fun grandfather.
Camilla said during an appearance on BBC documentary, ‘Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70’: “He will get down on his knees and crawl about with them for hours, you know making funny noises and laughing.”
Camilla has also said: “My grandchildren adore him, absolutely adore him.
“He reads Harry Potter and he can do all the different voices and I think children really appreciate that.”
What do Charles’ grandchildren call him?
To the Cambridge children, Prince Charles is thought to be known by the name Grandpa Wales.
The name has a sweet link to King George V, who was known to the current Queen as Grandpa England.
Robert Hardman wrote for the Daily Mail: “I have talked to those close to him…about the bedlam when the grandchildren descend (they call him ‘Grandpa Wales’, a touching echo of the Queen’s own relationship with George V whom she called ‘Grandpa England’).”
According to The Sun, Harry, Meghan and Archie had a video call with Prince Charles to mark Prince Harry’s birthday last year.
The source told the publication Archie has taken to calling Charles by the adorable nickname of ‘Pa’.
Charles has also earned himself a unique nickname from his step-grandchildren.
His stepson, Tom Parker Bowles told The Times his children grew up calling Charles “Umpa”, while Camilla was known as “Gaga”.
