The Queen’s husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died on Friday at the age of 99. An outpouring of national grief has broken out since Philip’s death, with many praising the Duke’s loyalty and devotion to the Queen and the nation over his lifetime. Given the royal title of Duke of Edinburgh in 1947, Philip certainly put his own stamp on the name, with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme proving to be one of the most defining aspects of his legacy.

Why is Charles now Duke of Edinburgh?

Prince Philip was given the title of Duke of Edinburgh by the Queen’s father, King George VI, in 1947.

Philip was given the title upon his marriage to then-Princess Elizabeth, later the Queen.

Part of the terms of the title was that it would be transferred to Philip’s firstborn son after his death.

As a result, the new Duke of Edinburgh following Prince Philip’s death is Prince Charles.

Charles inherited the Duke of Edinburgh title, as well as his father’s other hereditary titles, on the day Philip died.

As Charles now holds the title, the current heir apparent to the dukedom of Edinburgh is Prince William, Charles’ firstborn son.

However, William is unlikely to inherit the title as it is thought to be reserved for Prince Edward.

What is Prince Edward’s current title?

The Queen and Prince Philip’s youngest son, Prince Edward, currently holds the title of Earl of Wessex.

Edward was given the earldom of Wessex when he married Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999.

However, it was reported Edward would one day be Duke of Edinburgh when his father died.

Will Prince Edward be Duke of Edinburgh?

For many years, it has been believed Prince Edward will one day be given the Duke of Edinburgh title.

Edward had taken on many of his father’s responsibilities in recent years, including playing a key role in his father’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

However, Edward will not be eligible for the Duke of Edinburgh title until Prince Charles is king.

When Charles is king, his current royal titles will be absorbed into the crown again.

This means Charles will lose his Duke of Edinburgh and Prince of Wales titles in order to be monarch.

When Charles is King, Edward could be made Duke of Edinburgh as the title will be vacant.

However, whether Edward receives the Duke of Edinburgh title will be dependent on Charles when he is king, as only the monarch can allocate royal titles.
