In March, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke to Ms Winfrey about the reasons behind their decision to leave the Royal Family. Harry spectacularly claimed he felt “let down” by Charles in the lead up to Megxit, which led experts to suggest the Prince of Wales was blindsided by the comments.

Julie Montagu, royal commentator appeared on Channel 5’s ‘Charles and Harry: Father & Son Divided’ to discuss the Prince of Wales’ reaction to the Sussex’s interview.

She claimed Charles was “really knocked” by Harry’s comments in the interview, and suggested the family now have “real distance” to overcome.

Ms Montagu said: “The person who was really knocked to the ground in that interview with several punches was Prince Charles 100 percent.

“The takeaway from that interview was that there is a real rift, there is real distance, there is real anger.”

Harry told Ms Winfrey he felt “trapped” in the Royal Family, and shared Charles cut contact with him ahead of his exit from The Firm.

He added, when asked about his relationship with his father: “There is a lot to work through there.

“I feel really let down, because he’s been through something similar. He knows what pain feels like.

“I will always love him, but there is a lot of hurt that’s happened.

“I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try to heal that relationship. But they only know what they know.”

At the time, Charles was reported to want to make a “point by point” response to Harry’s claims in the interview.

Katie Nicholl, royal expert, told ET Charles was shocked by some of the allegations, but was talked down from responding as to not give the Sussex’s “more ammunition”.

She said: “My understanding is that Prince Charles did want to issue a more detailed statement (in response) to the Oprah interview and possibly address some of those issues point by point.

“But there was an evening to think about things and in the end, it was decided that a shorter statement would be better, (and) that going at things point by point could be potentially more damaging and give more ammunition for the row to continue.”

This week, Harry spoke to Dax Shepard on the ‘Armchair Expert’ podcast, where he said Charles passed down “genetic pain and suffering” as a parent.

He said: “Isn’t life about breaking the cycle? There’s no blame.

“But certainly when it comes to parenting, if I have experienced some kind of pain or suffering because of the pain or suffering that, perhaps, my father or my parents had suffered, I’m going to make sure I break that cycle so I don’t pass it on.”

A friend of Charles told the Daily Mail Harry lacked “compassion” for his father, and said: “Can you imagine how it feels to have that effort judged so harshly, so publicly?

“Harry talks about compassion. But where is the compassion for his father?

“Where is your compassion for your own family who have just buried a much-loved member?”
