Although Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s transition period with the Palace has reached an end, their relationship with the Royal Family could go through an “evolution” in the future, commentators have claimed. This comes after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed to the Queen that they will not be returning as working royals. Royally Obsessed podcast hosts Rachel Bowie and Roberta Fiorito suggested that Prince Charles “could change” the outcome.

Ms Fiorito told listeners: “I just wish there was a way to have continued Harry and Meghan’s role formally, somehow, and kept them in.

“When Charles comes on the throne, and William eventually, I think that this is all going to evolve.

“This role and this relationship could change.

“It’s sad right now, but I do feel hopeful because of that.”

Ms Bowie added: “It’s so disheartening to feel like the monarchy couldn’t make it work for two of the most loved people in the family right now.

“Especially for an African American woman.

“I do think that it shows that they’re still so locked into tradition that they can’t evolve.

“We’ll just have to see how it plays out, but I do think that history will not look favourably on the decision.”

Prince Philip had 'difficult relationship' with Charles says expert

Buckingham Palace released a statement about Harry and Meghan: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of The Royal Family.

“Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service. The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family.

“While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family.”

As a result, Harry has returned his military honours and remaining patronages.

Meghan has also returned the patronages she was given as a royal.

However they do retain their private patronages, and have pledged to continue a life of “service”.

A spokesperson for the Sussexes said: “As evidenced by their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organisations they have represented regardless of official role.

“We can all live a life of service. Service is universal.”
